This piece. What can I say? I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and my eye loves this piece. This piece is fairly large measuring 9” diameter by 11” tall. Leyland Cypress is a landscape tree favored by homeowners to create privacy for a residence. This piece has an unusual effect that I have only recently begun to play with. While this piece was drying in between its first and second turning on the lathe, a fairly large but very consistent split opened up as the piece contracted during that process. Rather than see this as a problem, I saw it as an opportunity. I filled the split with very small portions of the limbs, turned perpendicular to the surface of the form. These small branches are then epoxied into place, bringing complete stability to the piece and then clear epoxy applied like all of my other work. Its pretty fantastic really and as far as I am aware, I am the only lathe-turning artist to work an effect like this into a hollow form. I am also a pretty big fan of this shape as well.
You will never see a better finish anywhere. It is finished inside and out with epoxy resin making it impervious to the environment. A worthy addition for any serious collector and can proudly sit next to works of any highly renowned woodturner. I guarantee that all my pieces are far more stunning in person than they are in pictures. If you don't find this to be so, I will work to satisfy your discerning taste.
This piece is from the “blue series”, which refers to a series of forms bearing a dark blue bottom.
